“It’s a celebration. Clap, clap, bravo./Lobster and shrimp
and a glass of moscato.”
- Drake on Trey Songz’ hit track “I Invented Sex.”
What’s wrong with those lyrics? A lot. Besides the fact that bravo and moscato are only half-rhymes, nobody in his right mind is pairing lobster and shrimp with moscato. After all, it’s a dessert wine.
Rappers, by and large, are not sommeliers. Skilled musicians, yes, but I’d bet many wouldn’t be able to blind taste test the difference between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Why does this matter? Rappers are influential—they make a huge difference in the bottom lines of winemakers all over the world. So when they name check bad bubbly and lame liquor because “Andre” fits into their lyrics, that just kinda sucks.
(Note: I realize it’s not only rappers who are guilty of this. There are plenty of talk show hostesses who market bad wine to housewives. But we’re talking about rappers today. So, STEP.)
“I’m like Julius Caesar, when I come around you hail/
Fix me up a salad with tatsoi and kale.”
—The Nitpicker on his hit single “Leefi Greenz.”
